Thumb Guard sizes - how to measure up

MATTERS OF IMPORTANCE

It is wise to exercise caution when encouraging your child to break a thumb sucking or finger sucking habit. Older children often use these habits as a means of emotional comfort. Therefore, when children feel punished or nagged into ending the habit, our actions may make them want to suck all the more. Parents often state that it is of more significant benefit to remain patient, encourage the children, and help them feel that they are an active participant in the decision to stop thumb sucking. Allowing your child to choose their thumb guard design and even the fastening if they are able will go a long way towards helping them be successful using thumb guards.

Where possible, please measure your child's hand in inches. This is because the guard sizes are listed in inches too. Measuring in inches will make it easier for you to place your order. Don't worry if your measuring device is in centimetres, however. Please refer to the conversion table below to determine the guard size you need. If you are unsure about the sizing, don't hesitate to contact us for further assistance.

How do the guards fit?

We designed the thumb guards to sit comfortably over the thumbs. The fabric should also cross the lower back and front of the hand, fastening on the back. Combined guards are worn in the same way, but with the addition of a finger pouch. Finger guards, however, fasten around the wrist only.

When you purchase a cuffed guard for babies and toddlers, we will send guards with two fastening straps. One strap will fasten across the hand like the thumb guards, and the other will fasten around the wrist like the finger guards.

It is crucial to measure your child's hand carefully before ordering your thumb or finger guards. The guard needs to be a comfortable fit. Too tight, and it may restrict blood flow or pinch the skin. Too loose, and it might irritate the skin, cause chaffing or, pull right off.

How to measure for thumb guards

  • Place your child's hand onto a flat surface if you are able, with their fingers relaxed and slightly parted.
  • For thumb- guards, place the end of your tape or ruler on the tip of their thumb.
  • Now measure down the thumb from the tip to the lowest crease in the bend in the wrist.
  • Next, wrap your tape measure around the wrist and take that measurement.
  • Order the size based on the thumb measurement. If your child's exact size isn't listed, order the next size above your child's measurement. For example, if your child's thumb measures 2.9 inches order the 3-3.25 size
  • Write the wrist measurement in the personalization section of the order form. Please note we do not add names to our guards.
